Dustin and I have had the WORST luck with vacuums. Since we've been married we've bought multiple vacuums. They all last about 5 five times then they break down. Just so you don't think that we've vacuumed 15 times in the three years we've been married, we have a big shop vac that Dustin used for Monster Sak. That is the best vacuum ever but it's a pain in the but to drag around. We have been using that in between the regular vacuum purchases. This last vacuum died on the second use. The third time it started spitting stuff out. WE ARE SO DONE WITH VACUUMS!!! We've tried Dirt Devil and Eureka. Does anyone have a great vacuum that will last forever?

My husband was a vacuum salesman while he was in school :) My vacuum has lasted me about 12 years, no problems and still works GREAT (I think it's a SHARP....I'll have to go double check lol_) Anyway, it only cost us about 100 bucks. I know that Kenmore makes a good vacuum too and you don't have to pay for the more expensive ones... Good luck :)
I sold some kirbys for awhile. It seemed like a pretty good vac to me. Its cost is somewhere around 2 grand but it will be the last vacuum you buy. At least that's what my boss told me to say when i was selling them.
